Jurokunichi Cherry Blossom
(Tentokuji Temple)
"I will leave my stick and woven hat
At the westside of this village
To stay here, not to pass
The first cherry blossoms
Of Izayoi over"
(Saigyo)
Built by Tokumune XVI of Tentokuji Temple
on the propitious day of November, 1967 (Showa 42).
This tanka on Jurokunichi Cherry Blossoms,
was composed by Yoshikio Sato (Buddhist priest, Saigyo),
who had been a samurai
(being on guard at the north of Imperial Palace)
being in Emperor Toba's service
and resigned his post in the service
of the government to retire into religion,
staying in Iyo Country,
on the way of the pilgrimage all over the country.
There is Guganji Temple on the south of Tentokuji Temple.
Izayoi Cherry Tree,
that used to be planted in the precincts of Ryuonji Temple,
was suffered from the war damages
and we can't see its blossoms.
But the cherry tree glowing in Tentokuji Temple
and the remain of Kichihei's residence in Sakura-dani
come into beautiful flower every year.
The chief priest of that time wrote the tanka on this monument
that was by tradition the work of Saigyo
in the old documents in this temple.

十六日桜(天徳寺)
十六日桜は、
旧正月の十六日ごろに開花する
早咲きのヤマザクラの変異種である。
西に来て
杖（つえ）笠遺（のこ）す
この里の
初花桜
見捨てかぬれば
（西行）
この歌は鳥羽上皇に仕え
北面の武士であった佐藤義清（西行法師）が，
宮仕えをやめて出家し，
諸国遍歴の途中に伊予国に足をとめ，
十六日桜を詠んだものといわれている。
この花は、寒中に咲くというので、
寛保三(1743)年に出版された『諸国里人談』にも出ている。
小林一茶は、寛政七(1795)年正月十六日にここを訪れ、
桜が満開であったと『寛政七年紀行』に記している。
この桜は、古くから節会桜、辞世桜などとも呼ばれ、
「伊予節」にもうたわれている。
真冬に桜花をみたいという病父のたえに、
吉平が桜に祈ったという伝承から孝子桜ともよばれている。
この伝説を、小泉八雲が、『怪談』の中で、世界に紹介している。
十六日桜のもともとの木は、戦災で枯死したといわれている。
現在のものは株分けによって繁殖したもので、
花が咲く時期は昔より遅くなっている。
